planned visit to the site of last week’s alleged chemical weapons attack
outside Damascus has been postponed “in order to improve preparedness and
safety for the team.” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged all sides in
Syrian conflict to “give safe passage and access” to the UN chemical weapons
investigation team.

The administration is planning to release evidence,
possibly as soon as Thursday, that it will say proves that Syrian President
Bashar al-Assad bears responsibility for what U.S. officials have called an
“undeniable” chemical attack that killed hundreds on the outskirts of the
Syrian capital
The timing of such a military response is being
dictated by the need not only to assemble incontrovertible evidence against
Assad — an important prerequisite for the administration, and the country,
given the recent memories of a war based on false claims of weapons of mass
destruction — but also to allow consultation with Congress and international
partners.

France 'ready to punish' perpetrators of Syria attack
French President Francois Hollande said France was "ready to
punish" whoever was behind the attack, and had decided to increase
military support for Syria's main opposition.
Obama Administration officials argued that Assad’s actions posed a direct threat to U.S. national security, providing President Barack Obama with a potential legal justification for launching a strike without authorization from the United Nations or Congress. However, officials did not detail how the U.S. was directly threatened by an attack contained within Syria’s borders. Nor did they present concrete proof that Assad was responsible.
