The Crew PS4, Xbox One

Ubisoft's entry into the open-world racing market takes place across a scaled version of the USA and effectively works like a MMORPG – but with fancy cars. Players go online, form crews (effectively guilds) then go on racing quests and raids together, levelling up their vehicles as they would an RPG character. Challenges can be picked up on the fly and success feeds into your XP system, which can of course be used to upgrade you car, which has 19 elements to customise including gears, suspension and tyres. Players can build a garage, but the developers want you to get attached to one specific model, staying with it through the game – as you would with an RPG character.

Nintendo 2DS: is this the end of 3D gaming?

The Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, described the console as "an entry-level handheld gaming system", opening up the technology to cash-strapped families this Christmas. But many sites have read the move as an acceptance that the 3D gaming experiment has been a disappointing mis-step. Since its launch two-and-a-half years ago, the 3DS has shifted about 33m units, but the original DS machine had sold more than 45m units within the same amount of time

Meanwhile in the games industry, Nintendo is losing ground to its rivals Sony and Microsoft who both have new next-gen machines out in November. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are much more powerful than the Wii U and their head-to-head hype war has led to impressive pre-orders for both contenders, leaving Wii U and 3DS in the shade.

US warship deployed to Syria

A 505-foot-long guided missile destroyer, the USS Stout, has been sent to the Mediterranean Sea to assist the four US warships already deployed to await potential orders to strike Syria

Obama administration officials have suggested that the president has not taken the possibility of ordering a military strike against Syria off the table. Now should an assault be ordered from Washington, the US will have one more option at its disposal with regards to striking from the sea.

Syria's options in case of a strike

Syria's air defences used to be highly capable, based upon older Soviet-supplied systems like the S-200/SA-5 Gammon, together with some more recently acquired Russian weapons, like the SA-22 and SA-17. Syria also deploys a variety of sophisticated Chinese-supplied radar systems.

As well as air defences, Syria might seek to counter  Western naval forces by using its own arsenal of shore-based anti-shipping missiles. For example, Syria deploys the Russian-supplied Yakhont - a supersonic anti-shipping missile known in Nato circles as the SS-N-26. But here too the Tomahawk firing vessels may be out of range of Syria's defensive weaponry.

David Cameron's plea to MPs over evidence

MPs are debating a government motion which could pave the way for military action in Syria
there must be a compelling evidence" that the Syrian regime was responsible for the use of chemical weapons.

A spokesman said the party wanted to avoid a "rush to war" a commons vote is expected around 2200 BST. The House of Lords is also debating the motion but will not vote.

Syria: Russia And US Send Warships

Syria's ally Russia is sending an anti-submarine ship and a missile cruiser to the Mediterranean, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
An armed forces source reportedly said the planned deployment was in response to the "well-known situation" - a clear reference to the conflict in Syria.
The navy has denied the deployment is linked to events in Syria, saying it is part of a planned rotation of its ships in the Mediterranean.
